Melatonin is a hormone, naturally produced by the pineal glands in our brains during the night time. Secretion of melatonin starts as soon as darkness falls, and natural concentration reaches its peak between 2 and 4 AM. Due to fast rhythm of the modern life, stress, night shifts etc., secretion of melatonin is often disturbed. Sleep problems are therefore not very uncommon and can affect many people, especially older adults, shift workers and those who travel a lot (due to jet lag).
